Love Explosion entstand in einer Übergangsphase von Tina Turners Karriere. Nach ihrem Ausstieg aus der Ike & Tina Turner Revue suchte sie ihren eigenen Weg als Solokünstlerin und probierte verschiedene musikalische Richtungen aus, bevor ihr in den 1980er-Jahren der große internationale Durchbruch gelang.
